The basis of this scheme is the redevelopment and extension of a Category B listed office building. The project is to provide 2300 SQM of grade A speculative office space within the City Centre Conservation Area of Glasgow.
The brief involves the refurbishment and alteration of the upper existing three floors of derelict office space with existing attic space and roof being replaced with two additional floors of open plan flexible office suites. The project improves accessibility, circulation and way-finding throughout the building.
McGinlay Bell’s approach to the new roof extension has considered the massing, order and fenestration of the existing façade which has given a bespoke solution, rather than ubiquitous. Glasgow is a city made of stone with a history of craft and detail that can be found displayed within many of the buildings around the site and along St Vincent Street. This contributes greatly to the identity of the city and its character.
The detail of the new element of the extended façade is heavily influenced by the rhythmical and rational nature of the existing massing. McGinlay Bell have turned to precast elements, pigmented to match the existing stone for the external skin of the new element, which reinforces the buildings connection to the context.
